Dear Friend,
When was the last time you heard about someone who is suffering from cancer, hypertension or diabetes? Most likely, it’s recent. Worse it could be someone close to you. These lifestyle-related diseases have encroached upon all and are prevalent to the extent that 1 in 4 people you meet is likely a sufferer.
Is there anything you can do about it?
Yes! The good news is God has provided us with simple and effective principles in His word to safeguard our well-being. You can embrace a healthy lifestyle to prevent and reverse diseases and improve your quality of life. These principles are summarized with the acronym NEWSTART.
You can start again!
N – Nutrition: Let Food Be Your Medicine
God wants everyone to be in good health and what we eat and drink plays a significant role in being healthy. In His wisdom, the Bible reminds us that God gave “every plant bearing seed and every tree which has fruit producing seed for food” (Gen 1:29). Yes, your food can be your medicine! Embrace a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, nuts and vegetables. Remove artificial sweeteners, highly processed food and animal products from your diet. You can enjoy common fruits and vegetables like oranges, pineapples, cucumbers, carrots, cabbages, pumpkin leaves (Ugu), and water leaves to boost your immune system and defend against diseases.
Use Tofu(awara/beske) in place of meat. It is a better replacement for flesh foods. It comes loaded with all essential amino acids, proteins, vitamins and phytonutrients which helps to prevents diseases such as cancer and boosts the immune system. It is free from the saturated fat, cholesterol and other microorganisms which makes flesh foods so harmful.
E – Exercise: Move to Thrive
Exercise is a powerful tool for health. Engaging in physical activity, such as walking or gardening, stimulates the release of endorphins,- “feel-good” hormones that boost mood and reduce stress and anxiety. It can leave you feeling rejuvenated and happier throughout the day. You can start with a simple and effective exercise – walking! Whether you’re an office staff, entrepreneur, or student, incorporate walking into your daily routine. Take short breaks to stroll, use the stairs, and make deliberate efforts to exercise more.
W – Water: Drink for Life
“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink” (John 7:37). God knows our bodies need water for optimal function. Water helps maintain proper hydration, supports digestion, regulates body temperature, and flushes out toxins. Would you like a healthier skin, higher energy levels, and better memory and thinking ability? Drink more water! The average number of liters of water you need to drink depends on your age, gender, activity level, and the weather. However, a common guideline is to aim for about 2 to 3 liters (8 to 12 cups) of water per day for adults. Don’t let reasons like a busy schedule deter you from staying hydrated. Your health is worth it.
S – Sunlight: Embrace the Healing Rays
“But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.” (Malachi 4:2). Bask in the healing rays of the sun, but remember moderation is key. When our skin is touched by the sun’s rays, it produces Vitamin D, a vital nutrient that plays a significant role in strengthening our immunity against various illnesses and infections. By absorbing this natural dose of Vitamin D, we enhance our body’s ability to fight off diseases and maintain optimal health. Exposure to sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that influences our mood, promoting feelings of happiness and positivity. It can also help regulate our sleep-wake cycles, leading to improved rest and a more balanced emotional state. If you work for long hours indoors or live in areas with limited sunlight, step outside during breaks, and position yourself close to windows. Your body will thank you for this dose of nature’s remedy.
T – Temperance: Find Balance
“Be temperate in all things” (1 Corinthians 9:25). Temperance is about avoiding every harmful practice or substance and moderate use of the good things around us. Avoid harmful substances like alcohol and tobacco. Avoid consuming caffeine from drinks like coffee and energy drinks. The principle of temperance extends to other aspects of life as well. Be mindful of your use of technology and social media. You can stay connected without becoming overly dependent or addicted.
In your leisure activities, seek enjoyment in a measured manner, appreciating the pleasures of life without falling into excess. By embracing temperance in dressing, eating, working, and all areas of life, you can experience the true essence of balance and lead a more fulfilling, mindful, and healthier life.
A – Air: Breathe in the Freshness
“The breath of life” (Genesis 2:7) is in the air around us. Yet, we often underestimate its importance. Seek fresh air by opening windows, embracing the outdoors, and letting nature’s breath rejuvenate your being. Places with more trees and less industrial activities are the best places to get fresh air. Depending on where you live, you can come out for deep breaths early in the morning when the air is most fresh. Be intentional about taking deeper breaths.
R – Rest: Replenish and Renew
“He gives His beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2). Prioritize rest and aim for sleeping early. Amid the hustling to make ends meet, allow your body to rejuvenate through quality rest.
Based on scientific research, the hours before midnight are particularly valuable for restorative sleep as they align with the natural circadian rhythm. During this time, our bodies undergo deeper and more restful stages of sleep, leading to enhanced physical and mental rejuvenation. Your health deserves it.
Incorporating rest into a busy schedule is challenging, yet it’s important for overall productivity and happiness. You can schedule short breaks throughout the day to clear your mind and recharge. You can also reduce screen time, especially before bedtime, so you don’t disrupt sleep patterns.
One timeless way to embrace rest is by observing the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8), a weekly day of rest that helps us to disconnect from our daily worries and focus on spiritual and personal growth. This practice has been cherished for its physical, mental, and emotional benefits, providing an opportunity to recharge and find balance in our lives.
T – Trust in God: Cast Your Worries
“Do not be anxious about anything” (Philippians 4:6). Trust in God’s care and cast your worries aside. Worry can affect your health, so turn to prayer and claim God’s promises.
Allow His peace to envelop your soul.
